The global average of women in national parliaments in 1995 was 11.3%, which has increased by 14.8% over the past 27 years.
The Americas is the continent with the highest representation, corresponding to 33.8%. In this, Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico achieve parity or a higher proportion of women in lower or single chambers.
With parity in parliaments, political participation is expected to represent the population.
