Mother Jones, an investigative journalism and data portal, has been tracking the number of shootings in the United States since 1982. This initiative was launched in the aftermath of the July 2012 massacre in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. The database covers incidents that occurred in public spaces where four or more people were killed by the attacker (three or more people as of 2013).

The data obtained for each event revealed that out of the 143 guns in the possession of the attackers, more than three-quarters were legally obtained. Additionally, it was found that over half of the cases involved schools or workplaces, and 44 of the perpetrators were white males, with only one case involving a woman.
