The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) conducts an annual survey satisfaction survey of game developers around the world.
In the report published in 2018, which inspired this design, they asked 963 people about issues related to their background, race, gender, and perceptions of the games industry worldwide.
These respondents were mostly from the United States, Taiwan, Canada, and Australia. Of these, 74% identified their gender as male, 21% as female, 2% declared themselves as a transgender female, and less than 1% identified as a transgender male. An additional 2% selected the “other” category, which includes people who identify their gender as non-binary, fluid, or queer.
From 2017 to the 2021 version of the report, the percentage of people identifying as male went down 13%, women went up 9%, and those identifying as transgender went up 4% and the “other” category went up 5%. In addition, in 2021, nearly 40% of those surveyed identified as non-heterosexual. Thus, the data shows us a more diverse and open industry than just a few years ago.
The representation of a collective begins with the collection of data that makes its reality visible. This allows us to evaluate how the data evolves and what these changes entail. The graph of this design was made with the Datasketch Apps.
You can access the data and create your own visualization.
