Approximately 2.7 billion people will have no internet connection in 2022, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is the United Nations agency for information and communication technologies. The amount is equivalent to about 33% of the world’s population.
Although 5.3 billion people are Internet users, there is still a need for more investment in infrastructure and the promotion of digital skills to achieve a universal and quality connection to improve people’s lives. In this way, the digital divide can be reduced.
During the pandemic, web usage increased, but internet penetration slowed. In addition, growth varies across and within regions. For example, more than 80% of the population is online in the Americas, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Europe, compared to 40% in Africa.
Women have an Internet penetration rate of 83.4%, which is in line with the 83% of men. In contrast, only 34% of women in Africa use the Internet, as opposed to 45.5% of men.
