The debut of 'Cien Años de Soledad' on Netflix has generated a notable increase in searches related to Gabriel García Márquez's most iconic work. At Datasketch, we asked ourselves: what do Latin Americans want to know about this work?

To answer this question, we analyzed Google Trends data about searches related to ‘Cien Años de Soledad’ in Latin America, focusing on the most searched term by each country in the hours leading up to the series premiere.
We discovered that, at a regional level, interest in the novel surpasses that of the television adaptation. In the map below, you can see the predominant type of search in each country of the region: book, series, or plot. See the graph for more details.

The Written Novel at the Center of Searches
According to the data, searches related to the written novel predominate in half of the analyzed countries, followed by 30% that lean toward queries related to the television production. The remaining 20% of countries focus their queries on the work’s plot.
Searches related to the book, such as ‘Cien Años de Soledad epub’ and ‘Libro Cien Años de Soledad,’ are especially popular in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
On the other hand, countries where interest in the series has intensified the most include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, with prominent terms like ‘Cien Años de Soledad Netflix,’ ‘Cien Años de Soledad serie,’ and ‘Cien Años de Soledad Netflix estreno.’
An interesting finding is that in countries like Bolivia, Guatemala, and Panama, the predominant interest is in understanding the story, with phrases like ‘De qué trata el libro?’ and ‘Cien años de soledad resumen’.
The data allows us to understand behaviors like this, where a centennial work continues to captivate new generations through different formats.
