+60 Datos Plateados: Data visualization to improve the quality of life for older adults in Colombia

From November 12 to 15, 2024, Medellín is the epicenter of data innovation as it hosts the United Nations World Data Forum (UN Data Forum). This event will bring together experts and global leaders to discuss how data can drive sustainable development and improve people's quality of life. At this forum, we will present the +60 Silver Data project, an initiative designed to highlight the needs and opportunities of older adults in Colombia.

The United Nations World Data Forum (UN Data Forum) aims to promote innovation in data use, foster strategic partnerships, and mobilize political and financial support to enhance the quality and availability of data to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The forum covers four thematic areas:

  1. Innovation for more inclusive data: Integrating and leveraging data to ensure that everyone is visible and heard.
  2. Maximizing the use and value of data for better decision-making: Unlocking the value of data through improved analysis and communication, allowing people to use it to improve their lives and understand the world around them.
  3. Building trust, protection, and ethics in data: Valuing data while considering privacy and human rights protections.
  4. Effective partnerships for better data and a more equitable data ecosystem: Strengthening data ecosystems at the global, regional, national, and local levels through partnerships and collaboration.

These areas address key challenges in managing and using information globally, driving evidence-based decision-making and creating equitable policies that benefit everyone.

+60 Silver Data: Promoting the Silver Economy in Colombia

At the forum, we will present the +60 Silver Data project, a data visualization platform on older adults in Colombia, created for the Saldarriaga Concha Foundation. Through demographic data and resources, this initiative facilitates the development of programs and services aimed at this age group.

We focus on older adults because analyzing data about them is essential to ensure equitable public policies. In Colombia, those aged 60 and older make up about 14% of the population. However, scattered information and a lack of data sources have hindered the provision of suitable products and services for this demographic. By showcasing their conditions, needs, and habits through dynamic visualizations and participatory strategies, we align with the UN Data Forum’s thematic areas. Population aging is a challenge that we help address through accessible data for improved public policies and innovations that benefit older adults.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in health and well-being (SDG 3) and reducing inequalities (SDG 10). Collecting and analyzing data on this population group helps identify challenges and promote public policies.
